Every Search Carries an Intent
Every search carries an intent, and that intent generally falls into a few broad buckets: informational (learning something), commercial (comparing options), or transactional (ready to act). Targeting a high-volume informational term when the goal is leads, or a narrow transactional term when the goal is awareness, is a common mismatch that shows up later as disappointing conversion rates rather than as an obvious mistake up front.
Head Terms vs. Long-Tail Terms
High-volume 'head' terms are tempting because the numbers look big, but they're usually the most competitive and the least specific about what the searcher actually wants. Longer, more specific phrases carry less individual volume but tend to convert better precisely because they reveal more about intent — and collectively, a set of well-chosen long-tail terms can add up to meaningful traffic.
Find the Words Your Customers Actually Use
Keyword tools are useful for scale and for confirming demand, but they don't know your customer's actual vocabulary. Reading real support tickets, sales call notes, or community forum questions in your space often surfaces phrasing that a tool's suggestions miss entirely — and that gap is frequently where competitors aren't looking either.
